Jubilee Academies serving up new menu items next week

Power-up pulled pork tacos, cole slaw, cilantro lime rice, black beans, a fresh banana and dried cranberries. Is your mouth watering yet? That’s what the Child Nutrition Department at Jubilee Academies is hoping—as they roll out some new menu items next week as part of National School Lunch Week, Oct. 15-19, 2018.

National School Lunch Week was created in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. It’s a weeklong celebration designed to recognize the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life, and the impact it has both inside and outside the classroom. This year’s theme, “Level Up with a Healthy School Lunch,” plugs into children’s love for video games. When children pick up a healthy school meal, they pick up a controller they can use to win the healthy lifestyle game.

School lunches must include lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy. Studies show that children receiving school lunches consume fewer empty calories and more milk, fruit, vegetables and fiber than their peers. Additionally, school lunch participation is associated with a lower body mass index (BMI), and school lunches are healthier than typical packed lunches.

One of the goals next week is to challenge our students and staff to try new foods offered in the cafeteria. “We are offering some new menu items for lunch all next week,” said Angela Rodriguez, Child Nutrition Coordinator for Jubilee Academies. “We're also going to offer strawberry milk as an option.” Ms. Rodriguez says that strawberry milk will be offered for lunch every day next week and then just on Fridays for lunch. (During the month of February, it will be offered every day for lunch, too.)

The National School Lunch menu for next week will be served at all the schools where the District prepares meals, including Jubilee-San Antonio, Jubilee-Highland Hills, Jubilee-Highland Park, Jubilee-Lake View, Jubilee-Wells Branch, Jubilee-Brownsville and Jubilee-Livingway.

Several of our campuses are inviting parents to come eat lunch next Wednesday, when the pulled pork tacos are being served. Check with your child’s campus to be sure.

Children need healthy meals to learn, and Jubilee Academies offers healthy meals every school day. Enjoy the week!
