Jubilee Academies celebrates National School Breakfast Week March 4-8, 2019

Mornings can be really busy…the alarm doesn’t go off…the kids don’t want to get up… or they’re just not ready to eat. Or maybe your teenager grabs a can of soda and a bag of chips on the way to school. There is good news, though! Jubilee Academies serves free breakfast to all of our enrolled students, and next week school breakfast takes center stage as we celebrate “National School Breakfast Week.”

“We are seeing the benefits from the increase in our school breakfast participation,” according to Angela Rodriguez, child nutrition coordinator for Jubilee Academies. “We have fewer students coming late to school, and many teachers report improved concentration and more participation among their students.”

According to the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), eating breakfast at school can improve student academic performance and behavior.

Improved Academic Performance
  • Children who eat breakfast at school – closer to class and test-taking time – perform better on standardized tests than those who skip breakfast or eat breakfast at home.
  • The School Breakfast Program is an important tool for educators to ensure that students have adequate nutrition to learn and thrive and not be distracted by hunger or lack of proper nutrition in the classroom.
Fewer Behavioral Problems
  • Students who participate in school breakfast exhibit decreased behavioral and psychological problems and have lower rates of absence and tardiness.
  • Providing students with breakfast in the classroom is associated with fewer disciplinary office referrals.
Additionally, children and adolescents who eat school breakfast are significantly less likely to be overweight, while skipping breakfast is associated with a higher risk of obesity.

Next week, Jubilee-Wells Branch, Jubilee-Brownsville, Jubilee-Livingway, Jubilee-Highland Park, Jubilee-Highland Hills, Jubilee-Lake View and Jubilee-San Antonio are offering some special breakfast foods each day. Here's a sneak peek.
